What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

>Btw good job on the rendering from the torso, it looks amazing and super soft
Thanks, I have realized my one goal in art is get good at drawing male torsos and I am trying to get better at it

That's a shame, I think there are a lot of pictures that use 1 point perspective in a very striking way.

Very good technically, but you definitely could've had more fun with the composition.
You could've made the viewer lay on the ground with the tip of her spear hovering above his neck, or you could've let the viewer be a pathetic mortal observing her angelic take-off towards heavens from the ground.

Instead you just let the viewer be someone watching the angel from afar, without any engagement.

You already made him nerdy looking which is a personality normally associated with scientists. And gave him a pencil, which is associated with taking notes and being a thinker.

If you don't want to go to the obvious choice of giving him some type of lab gear, there is not much more you can do.

Although a pencil behind the ear like that reminds me more of a carpenter. I personally would give him a pen and put in the front pocket of the shirt.
Also maybe using more clear colors, because it is more associated with lab.

Great use of contrast. Would look even better with tighter line control and cleaner rendering, imo. Although I do admire the sketchiness to an extent.

Damn, this is pretty cool. He's giving off some Sandman vibes.

Great use of shape, Very confident. line work. Pose could use a bit more refinement maybe? It's hard to tell if she's sitting on the object or lounge on it. She looks disconnected from the egg shaped object.

You're been masking amazing progress and improving as illustrator. Your sense of composition especially. Although I think you'd holding back in terms of light & shadow. Your values sometimes look a bit too flat or not mood setting enough.

Your work has a very pastel dream book aesthetic, Imo you should give more thought to the lighting in your setting. I'd describe the lighting in that one as an overcast sky.

It's good that you're going for an ambitious scene. Do the best you can, but I suggest ending this piece at the lineart stage and moving to the next one. Overall, your expressions are decent for a beg, and its good that you're focusing on dynamic poses, but the piece is held back because you don't have enough experience with anatomy and clothing yet. Moving on, I think the best part of this piece so far is that you're telling a story in a single image. Some people never quite get that abstract concept, but if you're a beg and "get it", then you'll probably make it pretty far in art.
Lastly, good on you for not hiding hands, put in the pain now and you'll thank yourself later. But as I said earlier, don't take this piece to color, you need to keep practicing drawing for now. Good luck, dude.

I messed around with this some more. Made her bobs smaller (it's not a l*li, it's a generic fuggin anime girl with small bobs, and if you have a problem with this version, you must also have a problem with the big bob version because apart from the breast size, I changed nothing proportionally. Breast size is not indicative of age. In fact, there are far more women who have small breasts than there are women who have large breasts.) because I couldn't figure out how to fix the perspective of the bikini in the big bob version.
Changed the colors, eyes, legs and tried to make the hair more polished but I think I made the hair look worse. Thoughts?

I don't really have a good answer. I just try random colors and try to figure out what looks good as I go along. Usually I'll look at references if I'm stuck.

Well, you could post your artwork for me to see, but I don't think you will. Anyways, one thing I learned during stylization studies and realism is that what separates them apart is basically proportions. Obviously you can't do a large anime head with the average 7 1/2 heads proportions unless that character is actually reasonably tall. There's other things like shoulder and hip proportions too. It really just depends on what it is you're shooting for. So take this however.

Goblin head sketches in prep for a comission, any input would be appreciated cuz goblins are a bit outside of what I'm used to drawing and the client specified not wanting the goblins head to be disproportionately big.

If you're an absolute /beg/ fwap or draw a box may be helpful. If you can draw basic geometric shapes decently I would honestly recommend Hampton over Loomis, and just doing a bunch of figure studies to absorb what the book explains to you on constructing figures. I only posted the Loomis sheet because it's a good reference for proportions specifically.

I take it you mean that as in "If you can draw basic geometric shapes decently in perspective"?
Also why Hampton over Loomis, does he condense or explain the subject at hand better?
I don't know the first thing about figure drawing/studies, I guess Hampton's book will explain it?

This is a great character design.
I think there should be more consistency with the texture. You've got a rough charcoal-like brush for the shadows but a very smooth digital look for the highlights that clashes. I also think you should include a bit more ambient occlusion so that objects and planes stick out more from each other.

>I take it you mean that as in "If you can draw basic geometric shapes decently in perspective"?
Yes. Basically, if you have the skills to draw a sphere, draw guidelines on it, and place features on it, and to rotate boxes and cylinders. Perspective does not need to be perfect, but it very useful to have.
>Also why Hampton over Loomis, does he condense or explain the subject at hand better?
I recommend Hampton over loomis because Hampton explains how to construct the forms of the human body in a more easily understandable way.
>I don't know the first thing about figure drawing/studies, I guess Hampton's book will explain it?
Yes, Hampton is all about figure drawing. I would recommend taking his construction methods and using them while drawing along to something like croquis cafe videos.

Anon, this tutorial is in Japanese, but you could try just looking at the video.

Skip to 19:00 and watch until about 50 minutes in, he'll have an "anime face slapped to real anatomy" and then go through the process of turning it into more "2D girl".

The main gist is drawing things a bit thinner than IRL because when you don't have shading (flat colors in manga/anime), things look thicker than. That and a bit of altered proportions on hip height, head size and leg length to make it more idealized, but those steps are optional.
Line economy is also good to avoid uncanniness.

I honestly think drawing boxes is a useless exercise... when I study I do figures from reference or hands and feet from reference... like 10min each... But mostly I just draw stuff...
